Power cut toolbox: torch, light and texts
Free tools on one page for a power cut: switch on your phone's torch, turn the screen into a light, check the battery, text family that you are OK and dial 105 or 999.
What is in the toolbox
- Phone torch: one button switches on your phone's torch on Android phones using Chrome. The phone asks for camera permission because that is how a web page reaches the torch; nothing is recorded or sent.
- Screen light: fills the screen with white light, or a softer red for night, and keeps the screen awake. It works on every phone, including iPhones.
- Battery: shows your battery level where the browser allows it, with the steps that make it last longer.
- "I'm OK" text: opens your messages app with a ready-made text, and your location if you choose. Text messages often get through when calls and mobile data are struggling.
- Quick dial: 999, 105 for power cuts (03457 643643 in Northern Ireland), the gas emergency numbers and NHS 111.
Use it without internet
Open this page once while you have a connection and add it to your home screen. It then opens and works without internet, like an app.
Your privacy
The torch, light and battery check run entirely on your phone. Your location is only read if you tick the box, and only goes into a text you send yourself.
It does not replace the kit
A phone torch drains the battery quickly. Keep a real torch, a battery or wind-up radio and a charged power bank, as the three-day kit list and the government's Be Ready checklist ask (gov.uk).
